Happinet’s tactical RPG Brigandine: The Legend of Runersia debuted on Nintendo Switch and eventually released worldwide for PS4 a bit later. Since then, a PC version was announced and it launched earlier this month on Steam. I have been playing it on my test laptop and Steam Deck for my Brigandine: The Legend of Runersia PC review over the last weeks, and am glad to see most of my issues with the PC version sorted in its first update that just shipped yesterday.

For my Brigandine: The Legend of Runersia PC review, I will cover the PC port, how it compares to Switch, how it runs on Steam Deck, and more. Here’s what you need to know.

Brigandine: The Legend of Runersia PC requirements

Brigandine: The Legend of Runersia was developed and released first on Switch. Games usually designed for Switch have lower PC requirements, and this is no exception. Brigandine: The Legend of Runersia’s minimum requirements and recommended requirements are lower than you’d expect, and the game scales well even on Steam Deck.

Brigandine: The Legend of Runersia PC graphics options

Brigandine: The Legend of Runersia PC graphics options

Brigandine: The Legend of Runersia has resolution options, three graphics presets, and screen mode options. You can play windowed or fullscreen, and adjust the graphics between low, medium, and high. This is a very bare-bones port when it comes to PC graphics settings.

Brigandine: The Legend of Runersia PC performance – frame rate and resolution

On a laptop with an AMD Ryzen 5-3550H processor (2.1GHz Base speed up to 3.7GHz), 16GB DDR4 RAM, and an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 4GB GPU, I could run Brigandine: The Legend of Runersia at 1080p 120fps with no issues. The little camera stutter was addressed in the recent update.

Brigandine: The Legend of Runersia PC control options – controller, keyboard, mouse, and more

Brigandine: The Legend of Runersia has full controller support and it also supports keyboard and mouse gameplay. You can remap in both input options. The game also adapts on the fly if you use a controller but automatically swapping to the appropriate button prompts. One thing to note is that the default bindings use the right face button (B) to confirm instead of (A) on an Xbox controller.

Brigandine: The Legend of Runersia on Steam Deck – how does it run and is it better than the Nintendo Switch version?

Brigandine: The Legend of Runersia on Nintendo Switch had some load time issues and ran at a lower frame rate than the PS4 version. On Steam Deck, Brigandine: The Legend of Runersia runs at 720p and 60fps without issues at the high graphics setting. The 1.01 update detailed below addressed most of the performance issues on Steam Deck as well as PC. The PC version supports much higher frame rates than both consoles, and has faster load times.

Brigandine: The Legend of Runersia PC port issues

After the major 1.01 update arrived, the only issues I have with the PC port right now are to do with some frame rate issues while moving the cursor on Steam Deck only. Given how quickly the first update hit, I’m optimistic that the remaining performance issues will be addressed. Playing with a controller before 1.01 arrived was not fun though. Thankfully, the major issues have been fixed.

Brigandine: The Legend of Runersia Steam new features

Following its debut on Switch and eventual PS4 port, Brigandine: The Legend of Runersia has added a few notable new features for its PC version. There’s a new Creative Mode that unlocks unlocks after clearing Main Mode once. In the Creative Mode mode, you can pick their preferred power balance and starting knights to play without a time limit. There is also a New Game Plus mode letting you load a cleared save and carry items over. As of this writing, I was told that there are no plans to bring these new features to the PS4 and Nintendo Switch versions of Brigandine: The Legend of Runersia.

Should you play Brigandine: The Legend of Runersia on PC?

If you’re interested in Brigandine: The Legend of Runersia and skipped the prior versions of it, you definitely should grab it on PC. The major issues I ran into on my laptop and Steam Deck have been addressed, and the new features are nice additions over the already excellent console versions. I love the aesthetic, music, and gameplay. I wish there was a PC demo to let people try it out though as the asking price for an unfamiliar IP might turn some off.

Brigandine: The Legend of Runersia Switch vs Steam Deck

Brigandine: The Legend of Runersia is a superb strategy game that scales well on PC after its first update. Almost all my issues with the port were resolved with version 1.01, and it feels great to play even on Steam Deck. Having enjoyed it recently on Switch and previously on PS4, I’m glad to see Brigandine: The Legend of Runersia arrive on PC for a whole new audience. The new features and ability to play with higher frame rates than consoles make this the best version of the game. Hopefully the few other PC-specific issues can be resolved in future updates and that this PC port and prior console versions eventually lead to another entry.
