When Monster Hunter Rise was announced for March 2021 on Nintendo Switch, Capcom also revealed a brand new Monster Hunter Stories entry in the form of Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin. In the run up to Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin, The Mako Reactor spoke to Ryozo Tsujimoto, Monster Hunter series producer at Capcom about the team’s approach to combat, visuals, and more for Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin. Check out our interview with Yasunori Ichinose, Director of Monster Hunter Rise at Capcom, here as well.

Capcom is ensuring that Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin can be played and enjoyed on its own. Players will not need to have played the first game.

“Monster Hunter Stories 2 focuses on a new protagonist and their connection to the Wings of Ruin, and can be enjoyed with or without having played the previous game,” Tsujimoto says. “Playing the previous game can add to the experience for some players, but is not necessary. If you’re interested in playing it, Monster Hunter Stories is available for Nintendo 3DS, Android and iOS.”

When pressed for details about the combat in Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin, Tsujimoto was tight-lipped for the most part.

“We want to use the original game as a basis and the power up the combat,” he says. “I can’t say too much more right now, so please stay tuned for more details.”

The original Monster Hunter Stories was a technical showcase for the 3DS and Monster Hunter Stories 2 already is one of the best looking games on the Switch going by the trailers. I wanted to know how it was working with Nintendo Switch hardware after bringing Monster Hunter Stories to mobile in a gorgeous conversion.

“With the change to Nintendo Switch hardware for Monster Hunter Stories 2, we paid particular attention to the visuals,” Tsujimoto says. “It’s taken a lot of consideration, time and effort but I think the graphics are looking great and will hopefully attract even more players to the game than the first one.”

Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin is planned for a Summer 2021 release on Nintendo Switch.
