Fate/Samurai Remnant from Koei Tecmo launches next month for PS5, PS4, Nintendo Switch, and Steam worldwide. Thanks to an early preview code from Koei Tecmo, I’ve been playing the Steam version of Fate/Samurai Remnant on my Steam Deck for over a week. Having loved many of Omega Force’s games across franchises like Samurai Warriors, Toukiden, Attack on Titan, more-recently Wild Hearts, Dynasty Warriors, and more, I was very interested to see what the developer would do with Fate/Samurai Remnant. We’ve had the Fate Extella games release which I enjoyed, but I wanted to see what Omega Force itself would do with the Fate IP. I’ve only played the opening few hours (a couple of times to check performance), but Fate/Samurai Remnant is shaping up to be quite an ambitious game from Omega Force, and a fun action RPG. It is worth noting that this Fate/Samurai Remnant PC and Steam Deck preview is based on an early build so things can change in the final release. I’m very impressed with the port and game so far though as I will cover here.

Fate/Samurai Remnant PC graphics options

The graphics and display options in Fate/Samurai Remnant are clubbed into a single menu called “Graphics Settings”. These let you adjust all the settings across “basic” and “advanced” settings. The “basic” settings menu let you choose resolution (720p to 4K), screen mode (windowed, borderless, fullscreen), toggle v-sync, and use a graphics preset (high, middle, low, advanced). “Advanced” lets you customize the many graphics options to your liking. These are below. Note that there is no 16:10 support right now in the build I have.

You can adjust mipmap level (high, middle, low), shadow quality (high, middle, low, off), level of detail (high, middle, low), cull distance (high, middle, near), outline (all, nearby), terrain quality (high, middle, low, off), grass quality (high, middle, low, off), and toggle decals. Decals are display tracks, puddles of water, and more on the ground. That covers Advanced Settings 1. The Advanced Settings 2 menu lets you toggle depth of field, anti-aliasing, ambient occlusion, volumetric fog, bloom, effect quality (low, medium, high, no effects), and particle lights.

One thing I wanted to highlight specifically, is the separate “Game Mode” option in the game settings. This actually lets you choose “Performance” mode to target 120fps as opposed to “Graphics” mode that has the game frame rate capped to 60fps. Keep in mind that if you use the 120fps mode or even the 60fps and it drops a lot of frames, the game seems to slow down right now. I hope this can be fixed. It does actually support above 60fps which is surprising given most of Omega Force’s PC output.

You can adjust seemingly everything but the frame rate target (Game Mode) while in-game. Game Mode can only be adjusted from the title screen before loading your save from the looks of things. This port has quite a lot of options which I didn’t expect given this is a game from Omega Force.

Fate/Samurai Remnant PC control options

Fate/Samurai Remnant has support for playing with a controller or keyboard / mouse gameplay. In my testing, the button prompts swap correctly, and it even displays the correct controller in the in-game options to remap. I tested with my PS5 DualSense and Xbox Series X controllers and it showed the correct prompts automatically. You can remap most things on the keyboard side, but some inputs like confirm/cancel cannot be bound to other buttons on the keyboard.

Fate/Samurai Remnant’s mouse settings let you adjust sensitivity in battles and exploration separately. You can also use the scroll wheel to change targets and have this direction inverted.

Fate/Samurai Remnant on Steam Deck — how does it run right now?

When I redeemed the Fate/Samurai Remnant PC code, I knew it was a risk, because I’ve had a lot of issues with Omega Force games on Steam Deck over the years. Fate/Samurai Remnant surprisingly works great out of the box. I didn’t change anything barring some in-game settings to see how the game scaled in its performance on the Steam Deck. Even the opening cut-scene video played properly with sound. I thought that might require GE, but it just worked. There are some shader-related issues, but for an early build, Fate/Samurai Remnant is very promising on Steam Deck, and it might be my favorite way to play it once I get the full game since I enjoy Omega Force’s action RPGs on portable systems when possible.

Fate/Samurai Remnant PC performance — 120fps frame rate and 4K resolution support

I obviously couldn’t get Fate/Samurai Remnant to run at 120fps on Steam Deck even at 720p and low, but I did verify that it ran above 60fps in parts. Thankfully, 60fps is doable on the Steam Deck with a combination of a few settings from the low and above presets. I usually turn shadows down first, but there’s a lot you can tweak to get the performance or visuals to your liking. I would recommend starting with the low preset then going to Advanced and turning things up to see how you feel about the image quality. The Middle preset works with some tweaking, but you will see some slowdown. When forcing 1440p to match my monitor, the Steam Deck couldn’t handle Fate/Samurai Remnant and dropped below 30fps constantly.

Fate/Samurai Remnant PC preview

Before playing Fate/Samurai Remnant, I wasn’t sure whether to expect a Warriors/Musou game with a Fate flavor or to expect something completely different like Attack on Titan. Fate/Samurai Remnant blends in aspects I like from Musou games, but has its own flavor. It also looks gorgeous with some of its cut-scenes looking more impressive than most games like this. As someone who got into Fate through Fate/Zero and eventually Fate/Stay Night, Fate/Samurai Remnant has been a lot of fun in the early hours, and it is shaping up to be one of my favorite Fate games. It also feels like a very ambitious game from Omega Force.

I’ll be covering the story and more when I get access to the full build and also have the console versions to test. Hopefully this Fate/Samurai Remnant PC and Steam Deck preview helped you out if you were curious about the game itself, the PC port, and wanted to know how it runs on Steam Deck. Fate/Samurai Remnant releases on September 29 for Nintendo Switch, PS5, PS4, and Steam. If you’re curious about the editions, DLC, and more for Fate/Samurai Remnant, read this.
