Atelier Marie Remake: Alchemist of Salburg from Koei Tecmo America and Koei Tecmo Europe is set to release this July for PS5, PS4, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam as the 25th anniversary celebration release and also a re-imagining of the classic game for modern platforms. This remake has a new visual style, quality of life features, and more. Thanks to an early access code provided by Koei Tecmo, I’ve been playing Atelier Marie Remake on my PC and Steam Deck for preview. Having never played the original, Atelier Marie Remake is a brand new experience for me, and I was curious to see how it felt after enjoying all recent Atelier games including Atelier Ryza 3.

Atelier Marie Remake PC graphics options

As with recent Atelier PC ports, Atelier Marie Remake has a lot of graphics options, more so than many AAA games. These include resolution (540p up to 4K), window settings, frame rate limit (30 to 144 and unlimited), v-sync, an overall quality preset (low, standard, high, custom), texture quality, shadow quality, local reflections quality, effect quality, anti-aliasing (off, FXAA, TAA), a depth of field toggle, ambient occlusion, bloom, light shafts, and grass density.

Atelier Marie Remake PC control options

Atelier Marie Remake has support for controller and keyboard mouse gameplay. On the controller side, you get Xbox button prompts as usual. It swaps input prompts on the fly and has keyboard mouse button prompts. You can also rebind controls as needed.

Atelier Marie Remake PC performance – frame rate and resolution

After a bit of tweaking, I settled on the high preset at 1080p on my laptop. On my laptop with an AMD Ryzen 5-3550H processor (2.1GHz Base speed up to 3.7GHz), 16GB DDR4 RAM, and an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 4GB GPU, I got above 60fps at 1080p with everything looking great. I disabled depth of field because it was too strong. I hope the console versions get this option or an option to reduce the intensity of the post-processing. I didn’t expect to have too many performance options, and Atelier Marie Remake runs great even in its current early build. I will be covering the final build closer to launch in my full PC review.

Atelier Marie Remake on Steam Deck – does it run out of the box?

Just like Atelier Ryza 3, Atelier Marie Remake has a few issues on Steam Deck. I want to reiterate that this is an early build, so things can improve for launch. Without using Proton GE, the cut-scene videos don’t play. I opted for the latest version of GE and had video playback, but no audio just like Atelier Ryza 3. Proton GE 8-1, the one I used, also had better performance overall with me being able to do a near-locked 60fps with some tweaking. Just don’t expect everything maxed out and 60fps right now.

The image can sometimes start shaking in specific situations just like a few recent Koei Tecmo PC releases, and the fix is swapping resolution or display mode back and forth. I’m hoping that Valve can work with Koei Tecmo and Gust to improve Atelier Marie Remake and prior games on Steam Deck soon.

Atelier Marie Remake preview impressions

I didn’t think I’d be playing Atelier Marie Remake this early, but here we are. Having no experience with the original game, I’m pleased with the unlimited time option (an optional mode when you boot up a new game) and also with how nice it feels. Not only does Atelier Marie Remake feel like a great new entry point into the amazing Atelier series, but it also does a good job (so far) of bringing the origins of the series to modern platforms. I wasn’t initially sold on the aesthetic, but have grown to like it. If I didn’t know this was a remake, I’d have said Atelier Marie Remake is a big budget attempt at a 3DS entry in the series with its aesthetic.

I wanted to focus more on the PC port and how it runs on Steam Deck right now, but I’m very pleased with how Atelier Marie Remake is shaping up, and I’m looking forward to trying the final build out on consoles as well closer to launch.
