The Epic Games Store will show prices in Indian rupees from 2021. Right now if you visit the Epic Games Store in India, you’ll notice that every game is priced in US dollars. This will change from next year.
This was revealed by Epic Games Director of Publishing Strategy Sergey Galyonkin on Twitter. Replying to a user query on India currency support and local payment options, he said “it would be available next year”.
Now, it’s unclear to what degree Epic would support local payment options. To put it into perspective, Steam started displaying games with Indian rupee pricing in late 2015 despite being around since 2003. A broader number of payment options including cash on delivery (yes, cash on delivery for purchase of digital goods) was implemented at the end of 2016.
It is also unclear if these features would be executed by Epic’s US team or its India office or if like Valve, it’s outsourced to a third-party like Nodwin. We’ve reached out to Epic Games for comment and will update this story when we hear from the company. Regional pricing has been in effect for most games on the Fortnite creator’s storefront since its launch in December 2018.
The timing of Galyonkin’s tweet is interesting. A month ago, questions regarding local payment options for the Epic Games Store for PC as well as adding the Indian rupee to its list of supported currencies were met with no comment from Quentin Staes-Polet, GM India and SEA for Epic Games.
It's coming next year. But you don't need to have a USD-denominated payment method to pay in US Dollars.
