Gust’s newest JRPG has the studio working on a licensed property instead of something from older franchises like Atelier or new IP like Nights of Azure. Fairy Tail from Koei Tecmo and Gust is a JRPG based on the popular manga and anime of the same name. It features multiple playable characters with voice actors from the anime reprising their roles. With Fairy Tail available beginning now on all platforms, here’s what you need to know about the gameplay, story, editions, DLC, and more.
What is Fairy Tail?
Fairy Tail is a Japanese manga series by Hiro Mashima that began in 2006 and it was later adapted into an anime beginning 2009 in Japan. It is set in the world of Earth-land which is home to many guilds featuring wizards. Fairy Tail follows Natsu Dragneel who is a dragon slayer wizard from the Fairy Tail guild. Natsu runs into various characters in his journey and the story follows them facing off against various evils. The show and manga are full of lots of action, character development, fan service, and great music. The manga is available worldwide on Kindle while the anime is available on Netflix, Crunchyroll, and Funimation.
Is the Fairy Tail game based on the anime?
Fairy Tail is a JRPG with turn-based combat. It is based on the anime and covers the “Tenrou Island”, “Grand Magic Games”, and “Tartaros” arcs of the anime. It includes 16 playable characters from the show and also has appearances from characters outside the Fairy Tail guild.
Is this the first game based on Fairy Tail?
Fairy Tail has had a few game adaptations on Nintendo DS and PlayStation Portable but none were released in English. This makes Fairy Tail for PS4, Nintendo Switch, and PC the first game in the series to get an English release. It is also Gust’s first worldwide simultaneous release across multiple platforms. This is something even bigger publishers like Sega haven’t been doing for Japanese games.
Fairy Tail review
I’ll have a review of Fairy Tail in the near future alongside how the game plays on PS4 Pro, Nintendo Switch both docked and handheld, and PC.
Can you play Fairy Tail without having watched the anime or read the manga
While the game assumes you are familiar with the cast, it does have introductions for characters. If you’ve never read or watched Fairy Tail but have played an Atelier game, the gameplay here will feel familiar albeit with characters and a setting from Fairy Tail. Most anime games are developed for fans of the source material but the good ones manage being competent in their own way like the One Piece Pirate Warriors games. If you’re not familiar with Fairy Tail, this game will likely get you interested to read or watch the source material.
